How We Do Things

Last updated: September 10, 2026  ·  NestBox HQ

Here at NestBox HQ, we write practical guides for folks interested in Backyard chickens, chicken coops, and poultry keeping. This page explains how we put our articles together, where our recommendations come from, and how we support the site.

How We Build Our Advice

Our recommendations are the result of good old-fashioned desk research. We don't have a lab for testing products, and we don't get free samples from companies. We never pretend to have used a product if we haven't. Instead, we roll up our sleeves and compare:

  • What manufacturers say about their own products, from features to specs.
  • How prices stack up between different models and brands.
  • Feedback from actual owners, paying close attention to repeated complaints about quality, not just the star rating.
  • Product manuals and official documents to understand how something really works.

When we talk about long-term use, we're sharing what we've learned from the documented experiences of other owners.

How We Choose Products

We look for solid options, mainly on Amazon, and we're pretty picky before anything makes it into an article:

  • We generally skip products with fewer than 50 reviews. A small number of reviews doesn't tell you much about how it holds up.
  • Our top pick is usually the best-rated item that has at least 100 reviews. If a category is new or niche, we'll pick the strongest contender available.
  • We keep our lists short and sweet, typically three products or fewer. We're here to give recommendations, not just a catalog.
  • Every product has to be a good fit for the topic. No off-topic suggestions to fill up space.

Our Plain-Spoken Promise

  • We never accept money from a brand in exchange for a good review or a spot in an article.
  • We don't use fake author names. Our articles are a team effort, so they're credited to our team.
  • We won't claim to have used a product that's never been in our hands.
  • We won't quote experts we haven't talked to or use data without telling you where it came from.

How We Pay the Bills

As an Amazon Associate, NestBox HQ earns from qualifying purchases. If you buy something through one of our links, we might get a commission at no extra cost to you.

This commission doesn't change based on which product you choose, so we have no reason to push you toward one item over another. You can read more on our disclaimer page.

Keeping Things Accurate

We update our articles when products change or new, better options come along. If you spot anything that's out of date, incorrect, or just plain wrong, please let us know. We'll fix it right in the article.

Remember, everything on NestBox HQ is general information. For any job that involves real risk to your property or your flock, please call in a qualified professional.
